There are a lot of rumors that fly around the SEO channels. A lot of them do have some merit, especially since Google is constantly updating their rules and search engine requirements. However, a lot of the rumors flying around simply aren’t true, and if they were, they would be downright frightful. Since you want to know what’s going to cause an issue with your website and its ranking, it’s important for you to know which rumors have some credit and which are just not true.

So which rumors don’t have much credibility?

Keyword Density is Too High

There’s no such thing as having a ‘keyword density’ problem. Keyword density is blamed for all kinds of ranking issues, and people seem to think that too many keywords will destroy the ranking of a page, even if those keywords are different and have little to do with one another. Over the years some companies have said, “yes, we may use keyword density as a deciding factor someday,” but for the most part a good, natural writer shouldn’t have any issue cranking out content that doesn’t have any keyword problems. Even if the keyword density is something like 30%, as long as the content looks good and reads right, there’s no reason that a page won’t be indexed.

Doing Mutual Favors for Other Sites

A very common rumor that’s been going around for some time is that if you link to a site, and that site links back to you, the link ‘won’t count’ or will ‘lose value’ as a backlink. This stems from a practice that has, fortunately, faded from fame where people would just have pages and pages of links as a website. Now people are afraid to do mutual linking. In all honesty, it’s not a big deal – a mutual link isn’t going to kill your ranking, even if you have ten of them.

Links in Your Footers

Links anywhere on your site shouldn’t be an issue as long as they’re done in a natural way, and the footer links are no different. If you have a link there to call your company or to e-mail you, there’s no issue with that whatsoever. What a search engine would take issue with is if you had a footer that was exactly identical to another footer, and that footer was exactly identical to yet another footer. And then there are links in the body text that link to the same site, too. Then a search engine may forget to index your site because it believes it’s a duplicate – but otherwise, a website should be okay. Google does penalize for stuffing footers with bad keywords, however.
